Sunland Park’s youth skate initiative continues to grow, serving 53 local youth across its programming following the integration of participants from the Sunland Park SK8 Summer Camp. The program original capacity was capped at 30.
Members of the girls teen youth group visited Spin City Roller Rink over the weekend. Participants spent the session teaching one another roller skating fundamentals and practicing rink safety.
On Sunday, Kids Club activities moved outdoors to the local skate park area. The event included birthday celebrations for three youth members, complete with cake, gift bags, and presents provided for the kids. Alongside the festivities, instructors held practical workshops teaching participants how to assemble and maintain skateboards.
To meet growing demand, organizers purchased 20 additional skateboard decks this week. This brings the total number of skateboards distributed or utilized through the local initiative to 120.
Enrollment in the Sunland Park program currently stands at 53 participants. Although the program initially established a cap of 30, capacity expanded after absorbing participants from the Sunland Park SK8 Summer Camp.
Program leaders are also focusing on long-term sustainability by building out a roster of teen Junior Coaches. While leadership development requires significant training time, the newly launched Sunland Park Junior Coach roster is already approaching the size of its partner program in Eastside El Paso, which has been operating for four years as of this August.
Organizers will continue weekly programming, board assembly instruction, and mentorship training for local youth throughout the season.
