Sunland Park Starts City-Wide Vehicle Tagging and Removal Operation

The City of Sunland Park would like to inform residents that Operation Clean Streets, a city-wide enforcement to remove abandoned vehicles from the street, has officially begun. Backed by Sunland Park Ordinance 10-11-9, this operation is designed to keep our streets clean and free from the safety hazards caused by abandoned vehicles. With this operation underway, we wish to share some important information regarding the details of this project.

Operation Clean Streets will begin by surveying neighborhoods throughout the city to identify vehicles that qualify as abandoned. Code officers will use an abandoned vehicle investigation checklist to determine vehicle abandonment status. If the vehicle is found to qualify for abandonment, the vehicle will be physically tagged, and the owner will have 10 days to fix it or remove it from the street. If the owner fails to move or fix the vehicle, a tow will be enforced on the 11th day. After the vehicle is removed, an impound notice will be mailed to the registered owner if found. A 30 day reclaim window will be available for the vehicle before it becomes abandoned property of the city.

For residents that don’t have the ability to move their tagged vehicles, please call one of the numbers below. The City of Sunland Park wants to ensure that this operation is fair to all residents, so we strongly encourage people to reach out before the 11th day and get connected to the proper resources.

Please contact the Sunland Park Codes Department at (575)288-6075 or the Community Development Department at 575-589-3631 for any questions or concerns. These lines are open during regular business hours. Residents can also reach out via email at Vincent.Byrd@sunlandpark-nm.gov.
