Sunland Park Provides Update on Long-Term Planning and Regional Growth Activity

Sunland Park continues to experience steady growth as new residential and commercial activity expands throughout the region. With increased interest in development along the city’s western boundary and the broader Santa Teresa border area, the City is taking steps to support responsible, well-coordinated planning efforts.

To prepare for long-term growth, the City is reviewing state-authorized planning tools and evaluating how future development may affect infrastructure, public safety, and essential municipal services. This includes assessing where services such as water, wastewater, roads, drainage, and emergency response may need to expand as the region continues to develop.

Recent Planning Activity Includes:

Review of Voluntary Petition-Based Expansion Requests

Under New Mexico law, property owners may submit petitions requesting to come under municipal jurisdiction. These petitions are reviewed through a defined process that considers land-use consistency, service delivery, infrastructure capacity, and long-term planning needs.

Evaluation of Infrastructure and Service Requirements

The City is assessing projected needs for water and wastewater service areas, transportation connections, drainage improvements, and public safety coverage to ensure that future development can be supported efficiently and responsibly.

Financial and Development Forecasting

Growth in assessed valuation over time contributes to the City’s long-term capacity for infrastructure investment, public safety enhancements, and community improvements. As the region grows, the City continues to evaluate how new development may impact operational needs and capital planning.

Coordination with Regional Partners

Sunland Park is engaged in ongoing discussions regarding future utility operations, service transitions, and planning responsibilities. These efforts are part of a multi-year process to ensure continuity of services and compliance with state requirements.

Commitment to Orderly and Strategic Growth

Planning for future development allows the City to guide growth in a way that aligns with existing land-use plans, avoids scattered development patterns, and maintains consistent regulatory standards across new and existing neighborhoods.

The City will continue providing updates as planning efforts progress, growth trends evolve, and additional information becomes available. Sunland Park remains committed to ensuring that long-term development supports community needs, strengthens essential services, and positions the region for future opportunity.
