Sunland Park Police Department officers spent the past week stepping out of their patrol cars and into local schools, participating in a series of community engagement events designed to build relationships with area students. The week’s activities spanned athletic games, academic judging, and career presentations across several campuses in the area.
At Santa Teresa Middle School, Sunland Park police officers teamed up with U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel for a friendly basketball game against the school’s eighth-grade team. The game focused on teamwork and sportsmanship, ending with a final score of 40-27 in favor of the officers.
The athletic outreach continued at Riverside Elementary, where on-duty patrol officers accepted an impromptu kickball challenge from a group of sixth-graders during their school day.
Beyond sports, officers engaged with younger students to support both academic achievements and early career exploration. At the Desert View Elementary Science Fair, officers served as guest judges, reviewing student projects and discussing scientific concepts with participants. The department also focused on early career mentorship by bringing police vehicles and specialized equipment to Gonzalo & Sofia Garcia Elementary, offering students a hands-on look at daily law enforcement operations. Officers wrapped up these elementary school visits at Rosa Guerrero Elementary, where they hosted an interactive presentation and answered student questions about public safety and community service.
These school visits are part of an ongoing effort by the Sunland Park Police Department to maintain a positive, accessible presence within the Gadsden Independent School District. The department plans to continue these school-based outreach initiatives throughout the upcoming academic term.
