SUNLAND PARK, NM — The Sunland Park Fire Department has officially taken delivery of Truck 53, a 2025 Pierce Ascendant 100’ Aerial Tower, marking a major leap forward in the city’s emergency response capabilities. The new apparatus arrived on April 1 and will be the centerpiece of a formal ceremony at Fire Station 1 later this month.
The acquisition was born out of a 2021 Insurance Services Office (ISO) inspection that underscored the city’s need for a dedicated ladder truck. Funded through General Obligation Bonds, the Sunland Park Fire Department spent years meticulously designing the truck to meet the city’s unique geography. Unlike standard models, Truck 53 features a mid-mount design for better maneuverability in tight neighborhoods and a specialized “basket” for stable rescues at heights, such as the attractions at Western Playland, or below-grade rescues at the Rio Grande.
“As Sunland Park grows, our fire service continues to evolve alongside it,” said Sunland Park Fire Chief Daniel Medrano. “From the 100-foot ladder to the 2,000-gallon pump, every specification was chosen to make our community safer. This truck ensures that whether we are at a structure fire or a technical rescue, our firefighters have a dependable, state-of-the-art tool built specifically for our city’s needs.”
Standing 43 feet long and equipped with a 100-foot ladder capable of reaching eight stories, Truck 53 also carries specialized vehicle extrication tools and technical rescue gear. Following the push-in ceremony on April 29, the truck will move into frontline service to protect the residents of Sunland Park.
