Community initiatives across the Borderplex offer structured skill-building, athletic instruction, and hands-on mentorship on August 12, recognized as International Youth Day. Four distinct programs operating across Sunland Park, El Paso, and Southern New Mexico provide direct support to area youth through business workshops, athletics, mentorship, and agriculture.
SK8 4KIDS
SK8 4KIDS, established in 2023 by Luis “Dino” Loya, provides free skate lessons, equipment, mentorship, and meals to youth in El Paso. The 501(c)(3) organization uses skateboarding to foster discipline and community connections. High school participants also complete community service hours by cleaning neighborhood skate parks and mentoring younger children.
Kids Can Jr. Vendor Program
The Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico runs the Kids Can Jr. Vendor program for youth ages 6 to 17. Participants connect with adult mentors, attend business development workshops, learn life skills, and sell handmade products at local markets. Sun City FC
Athletic conditioning is available through Sun City FC at the Sunland Park Sports Complex, located at 4700 McNutt Road. The soccer club serves children ages 5 to 14, offering structured team instruction and specialized goalkeeper training. The first two training sessions are free. City Hall Community Garden
At Sunland Park City Hall, 1000 McNutt Road, the District 5 Community Garden initiative pairs youth volunteers with senior mentors. Led by Councilor Maria Burciaga in partnership with Border Voices, the year-round project teaches youth food systems, agricultural production, and crop sales.
