City Leadership at 2026 Congressional City Conference

Sunland Park Leaders recently participated in a strategic federal advocacy mission at the 2026 Congressional City Conference in Washington, D.C. Representing the community, Mayor Javier Perea and Mayor Pro-Tem Raul Telles joined municipal leaders from across the country to engage directly with federal officials and policy experts. This annual event serves as a critical link between local governance and national decision-making, ensuring that the specific interests of Sunland Park remain a priority in federal legislative discussions.

A central element of the trip involved participation in Hill Day, where City leadership met with members of the New Mexico Congressional delegation. These meetings focused on communicating the unique needs of the Sunland Park and Paso del Norte region, specifically regarding infrastructure requirements, public safety resources, and economic development opportunities. By maintaining these direct lines of communication with federal lawmakers, the City works to secure essential support and funding for local projects that benefit all residents.

Beyond direct advocacy, the conference offered in-depth policy insights into the impact of federal regulations on local governance. Mayor Perea and Mayor Pro-Tem Telles participated in briefings designed to help municipalities leverage federal programs and build sustainable partnerships. This engagement is part of an ongoing commitment to bring national expertise and resources back to Sunland Park, strengthening the city’s ability to deliver essential services and plan for long-term growth. Residents can learn more about the initiatives discussed during the event by visiting the National League of Cities website.
