Sunland Park Police Officer Honored for Saving Life While Off-Duty

At the August 4, 2026 City Council meeting, Police Chief Kiri Daines formally recognized Sergeant Yvette Ramirez with the department’s Citation for Excellence in Service, commending her exceptional initiative and composure during an off-duty crisis.

In the early morning hours of July 19, 2026, Sergeant Ramirez was driving home through El Paso, Texas, after completing a 12-hour shift. Near the North Piedras Street Bridge, a passerby flagged her down to report a man standing on the guardrail. Despite being off-duty and outside her jurisdiction, Sergeant Ramirez immediately stepped in, contacting emergency dispatchers and relaying critical, real-time location details.

Her fast action enabled El Paso Police Department officers to arrive without delay and safely guide the man back over the rail.

“True leadership and public service aren’t defined by uniform hours or municipal borders,” said Chief Daines. “Sergeant Ramirez’s instinct to act without hesitation, even at the end of a exhausting shift, saved a life and sets a standard of integrity that makes our entire community proud.”

The department learned of the incident after an El Paso Crisis Intervention Team officer reached out to praise Sergeant Ramirez’s conduct. City leadership joined Chief Daines tonight in celebrating Sergeant Ramirez for upholding the highest standards of the Sunland Park Police Department.
