Drive Carefully, New Road Safety Improvements on Monte Cristo Boulevard

As we welcome students, teachers, and families back for the new school year, the City of Sunland Park would like to make parents aware of the recently completed Phase II Traffic Safety Improvements on Monte Cristo Boulevard, extending from Rio Grande Drive south to Colorado Drive, adjacent to Riverside Elementary School.

Improvements were designed with student and pedestrian safety as the highest priority and include:

  • Raised center medians that narrow travel lanes to encourage slower vehicle speeds.
  • New angled parking adjacent to Riverside Elementary School.
  • ADA-compliant wheelchair ramps to improve accessibility for all pedestrians.
  • New permanent traffic signing and pavement striping that clearly identifies school crossings, crosswalks, and traffic patterns.
We encourage all parents, students, staff, and motorists to become familiar with these new traffic safety features. The lane-narrowing improvements are intended to reduce speeds, improve driver awareness, prioritize pedestrians, and provide highly visible crosswalks for students walking to and from school.

These important safety enhancements were made possible through the collaborative efforts of State Representative Raymundo Lara, the City Council, the Gadsden Independent School District Board of Education, and their dedicated staff, all working together to improve safety for our children and community.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during construction. We wish all Riverside Elementary students, families, teachers, and staff a safe, successful, and rewarding school year.

Drive Carefully. Slow Down. Watch for Children.
Have a wonderful Fall semester!
