Sunland Park is moving forward with a major initiative that bridges New Mexico and Texas through active transportation and regional trail connectivity. Backed by an $800,000 grant from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, the city is completing final design and engineering packages to advance key segments of the Rio Grande Trail.
This effort serves as a critical link in the broader regional network. The funding allows Sunland Park to connect the state’s vision for the Rio Grande Trail directly with the 70-mile Paso del Norte Trail system in Texas. By closing this gap along the borderland, the city establishes a continuous corridor for recreation, commuting, and eco-tourism.
A central feature of the final design packages is a comprehensive, color-coded wayfinding and signage system. Clear trail markers and navigational monuments will guide residents, cyclists, and visitors seamlessly across state lines. The planned signage directs trail users toward prominent local destinations, including Mount Cristo Rey, historic dining corridors, and regional paleontology sites such as the local dinosaur trackways.
Completing the final engineering and environmental clearances moves these trail packages to full readiness for construction bidding. Taking these segments to shovel-ready status positions Sunland Park to secure future state, federal, and private construction grants to build out the network. This strategic investment strengthens regional partnerships while expanding safe, outdoor connectivity for families throughout the Paso del Norte region.
