Construction is underway on the new Casa de Peregrinos satellite food pantry in Sunland Park, bringing direct, long-term food assistance closer to home for thousands of local residents.
For many families in the area, getting fresh produce and everyday essentials currently requires driving up to 50 miles round trip. With 46.2% of Sunland Park residents living below the poverty level, the time and fuel costs associated with those long trips create an added barrier to food security. The new facility, located directly in Sunland Park, eliminates that commute by establishing a reliable, brick-and-mortar source for fresh food within the municipality.
Beyond bringing groceries closer, the project offers tangible economic relief to household budgets. Each food basket distributed by Casa De Peregrinos is valued at over $250 and includes up to 70 meals’ worth of fresh produce, dairy, meats, and pantry staples. For families balancing tight monthly budgets, receiving regular nutritional support helps free up income for essential living costs like utilities, rent, and healthcare.
The project is moving forward through a coordinated funding partnership between the City of Sunland Park, Casa de Peregrinos, and state legislative appropriations. City officials and Casa de Peregrinos leadership recently met on-site to review construction milestones as crews work toward an anticipated opening in October 2026. Once fully operational, the pantry will distribute roughly 1,500 food baskets per month, providing assistance to nearly 5,000 individuals.
As construction progresses toward completion, community involvement will play a vital role in the site’s long-term operations. Casa de Peregrinos and the City will soon share details on local volunteer opportunities, community food drives, and intake schedules to ensure residents can easily access services on distribution days.
