Sunland Park and School District Leaders Tour Active Capital Projects and Map Out Future Growth

Connecting long-term municipal planning with school district needs requires shared vision and direct collaboration. To build a stronger bridge between city development and educational growth, Sunland Park city directors welcomed Gadsden Independent School District leadership for a mobile tour of active and planned capital projects across the community.

The field visit brought municipal team members and GISD administrators together on a shared shuttle to observe critical infrastructure developments firsthand. City Manager Mario Juarez-Infante led presentations at several active work sites, outlining how upcoming investments will directly impact local neighborhoods and school surroundings.

The itinerary spanned major drainage, transportation, and recreational initiatives designed to address long-standing community needs. At the Carlos Aguirre Phase 1 Flood Control site, participants viewed active storm drain installations and dual-pipe trenching aimed at mitigating flood risks in residential areas

The group also reviewed cross-border drainage challenges and containment strategies along the southern border corridor near the bi-national combined sewer overflow site. Additional stops highlighted progress on multi-use Rio Grande Trail extension packages, land use and mobility planning along the Monte Cristo Boulevard corridor, and ongoing facility construction at the Multi-generational Center.

The tour concluded at the Multi-generational Center, where participants transitioned into a roundtable discussion focused on long-term interagency alignment. City officials and school leaders exchanged ideas on aligning municipal master plans with district facility needs, ensuring that road improvements, drainage projects, and recreational spaces directly support student safety and family well-being.

By coordinating future grant pursuits, land-use planning, and public safety initiatives, both organizations reinforced a joint commitment to creating safer, more resilient neighborhoods for every household in Sunland Park.
