The City of Sunland Park, in coordination with Doña Ana County and regional law enforcement agencies, has launched a joint public safety initiative to address unlawful shooting and criminal trespassing near the border wall and the Doña Ana County International Jetport. The coordinated effort addresses safety hazards affecting regional aviation infrastructure and nearby residential neighborhoods, specifically the Valencia Park subdivision.
The area commonly referred to as “the wall” has historically been used as an informal site for recreational target shooting. Because ongoing regional development has brought residential areas closer to the location, the activity now poses an immediate threat to public safety. Local officials confirmed multiple instances of property damage, including bullet holes in nearby residential structures and rooftops. Furthermore, a stray round recently struck an occupied aircraft operating from the Jetport, creating a hazard to regional aviation operations.
In response to these incidents, regional leaders and law enforcement partners formed a coalition to secure the area. Private property owners installed “No Trespassing” signage across the impacted acreage and signed formal agreements authorizing law enforcement to enforce criminal trespass laws on their behalf. To maximize enforcement capabilities, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office cross-commissioned Sunland Park Police officers, establishing a joint jurisdictional response.
The public safety operation relies on a phased approach to achieve compliance. Law enforcement personnel from the Sunland Park Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State Police are conducting increased patrols using standard vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and utility task vehicles. Officers are currently focusing on public education, advising individuals regarding property boundaries and criminal trespass laws. Following this initial educational period, agencies will transition to a zero-tolerance policy, issuing citations and pursuing charges against individuals violating the posted restrictions.
Surveillance technology is also being deployed to support ongoing investigations and monitor the area. Residents who observe illegal shooting or trespassing are encouraged to report the activity to law enforcement.
