Five Free Summer Travel Ideas for Sunland Park Residents

The South Central Regional Transit District (SCRTD) network is operating entirely fare-free through December 31, 2026, giving Sunland Park residents an opportunity to explore regional destinations at no cost. This zero-cost benefit applies to all local routes and regional connection hubs, making day trips affordable before regular fare collections resume on January 1, 2027. Residents can plan several summer excursions using the interconnected transit system.

A direct trip to the Downtown Terminal in El Paso, TX, offers easy access to cultural sites. The Yellow Line runs from the Sunland Park City Hall Transfer Center directly to the Downtown Transit Center. This route allows families to visit downtown museums, historic plazas, and regional libraries without paying for metropolitan parking. For those looking to visit the North Mesa Street area, the Silver Line provides a direct connection to the Westside Transfer Center.

Northbound routes connect local passengers to unique New Mexico communities across the broader regional network. Taking the Purple Line from Sunland Park City Hall to the Anthony Transfer Center allows riders to transfer to the Red Line toward Las Cruces. From the Las Cruces transit hub, travelers can board the Green Route to visit Hatch, a valley town famous for its green chile heritage, where visitors can sample authentic local dishes and shop at seasonal roadside produce markets.

The transit network extends even further north into Sierra County for overnight or weekend trips. Passengers transferring from the Hatch hub to the Blue Route can ride directly into Truth or Consequences to soak in the historic natural hot springs or explore downtown art galleries. This same Blue Route continues to Elephant Butte Lake State Park, offering a simple way to spend a day fishing, kayaking, or enjoying a lakeside picnic.

Reviewing the complete network map helps riders visualize these connection points across county lines. Real-time bus tracking and exact arrival schedules are available through the Passio GO! mobile application.
