Joint Public Safety Initiative Targets Trespassing and Unlawful Shooting Near Santa Teresa Jetport

SUNLAND PARK, NM — The City of Sunland Park, in coordination with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police, is launching a joint initiative to stop criminal trespassing and unlawful shooting near the Doña Ana County International Jetport. This effort responds to reports from residents in the Valencia Park and Villa Valencia neighborhoods regarding unauthorized access to private property and stray gunfire.

Beginning 06/19/2026, law enforcement agencies will increase patrols during periods identified as having high unauthorized activity. Officers will educate the public on state criminal trespass laws and enforce violations. Property owners in the affected areas have authorized law enforcement to act on their behalf and intend to pursue prosecution against individuals found unlawfully entering their land.

The City of Sunland Park has installed a license plate reader and a surveillance camera at the entrance of Highway 136 to assist with departmental investigations. These tools provide law enforcement with data to identify and hold accountable those who endanger the public through reckless behavior.

Under New Mexico law, criminal trespass occurs when an individual knowingly enters or remains on private property where access is denied or clearly posted. Violations result in citations, arrest, criminal charges, or civil liability. Residents who witness trespassing, reckless shooting, or suspicious activity should report these incidents directly to law enforcement. Public safety depends on the vigilance of the community and the strict enforcement of property rights.
