IN LOVING MEMORY OF BYRON W. CROSS
The City ofSunland Park morns the loss of our Enivornmental Program Coordiantor, Byron W. Cross. Mr. Cross was involved in a fatal accident on Monday, January 28th, 2019. He stopped to render assistance to a motorist in a stalled vehicle on Interstate 10, and was struck by another vehicle. Byron joined the Sunland Park family on October 9, 2018, and went right to work on improving our tire reycling and illegal dumping efforts. He was excited to be part of the Sunland Park team and worked hard to help make Sunland Park a better place to live, work and play. He was very passionate and proud of the environmental program he developed for the City and was actively working on the campaign to "Keep Sunland Park Clean". We will miss him and will honor the program he left for us to follow, listed below:
The City of Sunland Park's Environment Program strives to provide a framework under which decision making and planning for the city may occur. This framework is based on the triple bottom line concept and embraces the interdependence of environmental quality, economic growth and social justice. Underpinning all activities with this philosophy, ensures that the city develops in a sustainable and resilient manner – a form of growth and development that provides for the needs of present generations, without compromising the ability of future generations to prosper in a clean and healthy environment.
The City of Sunland Park's Environmental Program subscribes the following concepts:
Sustainability: The City of Sunland Park strives to forever keep in mind how best to design construction maintainable over time, causing minimum impact on the environment, balancing near-term interests alongside the protection of future generations. The city embraces the interdependence of environmental quality, economic growth and social justice and strives to keep all operations and endeavors in line with the triple bottom line.
Conservation: The City of Sunland Park strives to be a good steward of the natural resources available in order to prevent depletion, prevent pollution and to do no harm to the environment. We strive to reduce energy consumption by seeking renewable sources, curtailing waste generation through recycling programs and eliminating dependence on fossil fuels.
Restoration: The City of Sunland Park works hard to clean-up environmentally degraded eco-systems, in particular our riparian corridor, and actively seeks funding sources and resources for restoration of brownfields within the city.
Leadership: The City of Sunland Park's staff and community activists will lead from the front, striving to be keystone models and educators in environmental stewardship. Personal gain will never impede Sunland Park staff from “doing the right thing” in environmental matters.
Continuous Improvement: The City of Sunland Park continuously reviews it’s environmental program, targeting opportunities for improvement, implementing necessary changes in light of the triple bottom line: the nexux of environmental quality, economic growth and social justice.
