Mayor Javier Perea is a proud graduate of New Mexico State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.  Javier Perea was appointed as the Mayor of Sunland Park on August 1st, 2012 while he was only 25 years of age.

Having no prior political experience, Mayor Perea has had to climb a steep learning curve and faced many challenges. Mayor Perea inherited a City filled with bad publicity, a budget deficit, low employee morale, and failing infrastructure. However, due to his patience, discipline, and strong commitment to his community, Mayor Perea has successfully turned the City around.

Prior to his tenure, the City had close to 50 negative audit findings. That number has now been reduced to ZERO, ranking Sunland Park as having one of the top financial audits in the State of New Mexico.

In addition to his mayoral responsibilities, Mayor Perea currently serves on the El Paso Metropolitan Planning Organization, South Central Council of Governments, South Central Regional Transit District, Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority, New Mexico Municipal League Policy/Resolutions Committee, Camino Real Consortium, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Mayor Perea continues to address the City’s many challenges and remains focused on strategic management, organization, planning, finance, economic development, transportation and infrastructure.
“The City is at the cusp of great potential . Nestled between El Paso, Las Cruces, and Ciudad Juarez, it is the heart of the region. The future success of our City will take the collaboration of our elected officials and the people they represent, along with the businesses and a responsive, ethical government . I am committed to serving the people of Sunland Park!”
